Jack's Girl – A Short Story

Jack entered his apartment and went into the kitchen to get a drink.
It had been a long morning, and the Doctors office wasn't his favorite place to be.
The other patients annoyed him.
And the shot he got was making him a little tired and groggy.
It wasn't "his" apartment, the lease was actually in Karen's name, and she handled all the financials.
But she was his girl, and he was happy.
Karen was only 19.
Her mom and dad had helped her get the lease on the apartment here a year ago, and it was ideal since the college was so close by.
They really appreciated Jack living with her.
They praised his protective nature, and often bought him little gifts.
He liked them a lot.
But he LOVED Karen.
Karen's mom was a little strange about him sleeping in her bed, but Karen was grown now and this was "Karen's House".
Mothers couldn't decide on such things for their daughters forever.
But she knew that SHE would never do anything like that.
Jack had come to live there about a month after Karen moved in.
Karen's dad thought her moving was because he would have never allowed this in his house, but he kept it to himself.
After a few months, jack kinda grew on them.
And soon he was just a part of the family.
Jack had even stayed in their house when Karen came home for Christmas. But he wasn't allowed to sleep in her room with her.
After his thirst was sated, he went into the living room and laid down on the couch.
He was tired, and wanted a nap.
Karen told him she was going out for a while, and he was fine with that as it would give him a chance to sleep a while.
She kissed his forehead, then grabbed her keys and opened the door. "You be good while I'm gone now."
Jack just stared at her for a moment and she giggled in her sweet way and closed the door.

At 5pm, the winter darkness was quickly replacing the light.
Jack heard Karen in the hallway outside the door and got up off the couch.
But her voice was strained and sounded different.
"I'm trying." She was saying. "Please, I know the keys are here in my purse. I'm not lying to you. You can take what you want, just don't hurt me."
Jack heard the man's voice, and it sounded angry and threatening.
He immediately went to stand nearer and to the side of the door.
As the door opened, the man shoved Karen into the room.
Jack saw RED at how karen was being treated, and at her fear of harm.
The man was was quick, and slammed the door behind them.
Jack was just as quicker.
Jack's muscular 155 pounds crashed into the guy knocking him to the floor, and immediately Jack was on top of him.
His attack was all out and as ruthless as he could summon.
As the man begged and screamed in pain for him to stop, Jack kept right on.
No mercy.
No forgiveness.
Noone had the right to threaten harm to "his girl".
And then it was over.
The man was on the floor, lying motionless.
Karen was crying and had picked up and dialed the phone.
She was giving information to the person on the other end frantically.
Jack didn't check, and didn't know how to check, but he knew the man was dead and it was his doing.
"Oh well," he thought, "he shouldn't have tried to hurt Karen."
Jack went to Karen and she hugged him fiercely and cried.

Jack sat beside Karen on the couch and just listened and watched as she told the one policeman what had happened.
The policeman was wary of Jack, but didn't make any moves to remove him.
Other policemen and Paramedics were helping the coroner take pictures and remove the body.
The man had hidden in the bushes outside the apartment complex.
Just as Karen had opened the steel security gate, he ran up to her and clamped his hand over her mouth.
"I'll kill you B***h. Do what I say and you will live."
The man had then made her lead the way to her door, and forced her to open it.
The policeman said the man fit the description of a serial rapist that had atacked over a dozen women in the area.
They were faily positive it was the same guy, and DNA would confirm if it was.
As everyone was leaving, she walked to the door with the cop.
"It's a good thing Jack here was inside waiting. No telling what might have happened if not for him."
He handed karen a card, and asked ... "So, exactly how old IS Jack?"
"He'll be One Year old next month."
"It's great you had him. I always wanted a Rottweiler myself. Now I might have to get one for MY daughter. She's off to college next year too."
After locking up, she went and hugged Jack again.
"You hungry boy?"
He licked his chops in answer.
"Let's go get take-out. I'm thinking you might like a BIG STEAK tonight."
